Southern California Area Basileis Conference Call
A conference call for the Southern California Area Basileis was held on May 31, 2011 at 8:30pm to discuss:
Chapter Activation
Lambda chapter has been reactivated. Potential candidates for membership are targeted at California State University, Los Angeles, USC, UCLA, Occidental, Loyola Marymount University and California State University, Northridge.
Omega Day At The Capitol
On Monday, June 27, 2011, fifteen brothers from SoCal Area joined the brothers from NorCal Area to participate in this year’s Omega Day at the Capitol event in Sacramento, CA. The co-chairs, Brother James Walker and Brother Willie Washington along with Brother Sedrick Spencer, 12th District Representative, and Brother Isadore Hall, 52nd Assemblyman welcomed the brothers and mentees to engage select legislators to discuss issues related to mentoring.
NorCal Area BBQ
On Saturday, June 25, 2011, I had the pleasure of attending the NorCal Area BBQ on the drive to Sacramento, CA for the Omega Day at the Capitol event. The food and fellowship was well received. I would like to thank the brothers of NorCal Area for their hospitality.
So-Cal Area Meeting
The So-Cal Area Meeting was held on Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 9am-12pm in Long Beach, CA on the campus of Long Beach State. The meeting was hosted by Phi Beta Beta chapter. Brother Sedrick Spencer, District Representative, Brother Nick Thompson, DKRS, and Brother Derrick Delaney, District Chaplain were present to give updates to the brotherhood. Breakfast and lunch was served. After the meeting, the PBBC Foundation organized workshops on Cutting Debt and Establishing a Trust. I would like to thank the brothers of Phi Beta Beta for hosting the meeting.
Upcoming Activities
Annual Youth Leadership Conference
The 18th Annual Youth Leadership conference was held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 on the campus of USC in Taper Hall. The conference was open to the first 500 young men between the ages of 8-18; 150 at parent conference, and 200 fathers as part of the Fatherhood Initiative; Theme: “Excellence without Excuses”. The goal for this year’s conference was to have 150 men of Omega Psi Phi in attendance.
Brother Dr. Andrew Ray, Grand Basileus and Brother Steve Harvey radio personality will be attending the event.
12th District Centennial Gala
On Saturday, October 22, 2011, the brothers of SoCal Area will serve as host to the 12th District Centennial Gala in Los Angeles, CA at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The theme “Mentoring African -American Male Youth for One Hundred Years and Beyond”. The event highlighted Social Action and Mentoring programs as well as honoring brothers who have transitioned to Omega chapter. Brother Dr. Andrew Ray, Grand Basileus, and Brother Steve Harvey are planned keynote speakers.
Fall 12th District Council Meeting
On Sunday, October 23, 2011, the brothers of Lambda Omicron and Lambda will serve as host to the District Council meeting at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel from 8:30am-1pm.
Southern California Area Chapter Recap:
Eta Alpha Alpha: On Monday, June 27, 2011, the brothers converged on the State Capitol to focus on discussing legislation that promotes mentoring. Each brother was encouraged to make an appointment with his local representatives in advance, and was briefed prior to those meetings on how to optimize the opportunity. In addition, members of the Legislative Black Caucus each held a question and answer session with the Men of Omega. Lunch and a Legislative Resolution were sponsored by the Honorable Isadore Hall, 52nd Assembly District representative.
Mu Alpha Alpha: On Saturday, June 18, 2011, the brothers held the Father’s Day Jazz Breakfast. A good time was held by all. The brothers raised $5,000 to support scholarship program through the Mu Alpha Alpha Youth Foundation.
Phi Beta Beta: On September 11, 2011, the chapter kicked-off the ongoing Omega Excel Mentoring / Tutorial Program. For more information, contact Brother Michal Haynes (562) 355-5818.
Psi Xi: Awarded seven $500 scholarships to worthy minority high school students in Ventura County. The seven scholarship recipients are: Jeremiah Beaty, Alysha Childs, Imani Dixon, Kareka Green, Aleiahua Jones, Raheesa Legohn, and Olivia Watson.
On Saturday, July 23, 2011 the chapter held its 14th Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament. The proceeds from this tournament help fund our annual scholarships. This year’s tournament was held at the River Ridge Golf Club in Oxnard. Brother Jay Rodriguez and Brother Al Duff, Sr. coordinated this year’s event. Over 50 golfers played and were treated to BBQ, Awards Ceremony and an auction immediately following.
Sigma Iota Iota: Held the Second Annual Wine Taste on Saturday, August 27, 2011 in Palmdale, CA at 8pm.
Tau Tau: On August 20, 2011, the chapter hosted the LA Area BBQ at Victoria Community Regional Park in Carson, CA. Lambda Omicron, Mu Alpha Alpha, Phi Beta Beta, Zeta Rho, and Zeta Tau chapters were also involved in coordinating the event. The event was well attended by brothers the SoCal Area.
Xi Gamma Gamma: Participated in the quarterly chapter visit on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Oceanside, CA.
Zeta Rho: On Saturday, June 4, 2011, the Zeta Rho Foundation, in partnership with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. hosted the 29th Annual Salute and Scholarship Banquet. The event was truly spectacular. Ten outstanding African American male high school seniors were awarded scholarships for accomplishments in academics and community service. Total scholarships awarded exceeded $42,000.
Zeta Tau: The chapter along with Zeta Tau Foundation will be conducting the annual Macy’s fundraiser – selling discount sales tickets which authorize the ticket holder to receive deep discounts on Macy’s merchandise.
Southern California Area Undergraduate Activities:
Phi Lambda: Held 4.0 GPA workshops, October 6, 2011 on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona, and October 18, 2011 on the campus of LaVerne.
